The Book of Kells is an extraordinary hand-drawn manuscript of the four gospels in Latin based on a Vulgate text, written on vellum (prepared calfskin). Dating from the year 800, with colourful illumination & elaborate scripting you can see why it is one of the most popular things to visit in Dublin and attracts over 500,000 visitors a year.
The Book of Kells is displayed with other manuscripts at Trinity College’s Old Library. Two volumes are on public view and are changed at regular intervals. They are displayed in a wooden bulletproof cabinet to help protect them for future generations. One is opened to display a major decorated page, and one to show two pages of script and each day the page in the book is turned over so you can observe every detail of the hand-drawn manuscript
The grand, chained library in Trinity College holds many rare works on Irish History & frequently changes the displays of rare works.
