Malahide Coastal Town

Malahide is a beautiful coastal town in North County Dublin. It is a fantastic day trip not too far from the city and with a host of amenities, there is plenty to keep you and your family entertained.

The marina, beach, and waterfront walks into Portmarnock are key attractions of Malahide. Malahide has a beautiful Marina with 350 fully serviced berths in a sheltered inlet. Leading on from this towards the sea there is a 2km beach, which following an attractive coastal walk, leads into the neighbouring Portmarnock beach. Depending on how far along you walk you can take in beautiful views out into Dublin Bay towards Lambay Island, Howth, and Ireland's Eye.

Walking from the village along the beach you’ll come to the wide Velvet Strand along the Mouth of the Estuary. From here the beach leads to Low Rock, a very popular swimming section of the beach with excellent water quality. As you continue on, the beach gets rockier as you approach High Rock and eventually leads on to Portmarnock beach. If you don’t want to walk along the beach, there are also designated coastal walkways with proper footpaths.

The other major attraction is Malahide Castle & Gardens. Nestled in off the beaten track away from the hustle and bustle of the town, this is a stunningly restored medieval castle with extensive gardens and visitor centre. The castle itself offers tours and talks about the restoration and the Talbot family which have inhabited it throughout the centuries. The visitor centre is home to a gift shop and the Avoca Café. The gardens are truly stunning with a butterfly house and walled garden to name just a few highlights. There are acres of parkland for plenty of walks, activities and picnics with a fairy trail and playground to keep the little ones busy.

This truly picturesque village embodies old-school Irish seaside charm yet being surprisingly chic with upmarket boutiques and stylish eateries throughout. The winding streets are very pleasant to take a leisurely stroll through, while popping into one of the bespoke outlets for a browse or stopping off to enjoy a coffee and pastry in one of the quaint cafés lining the marina.

Malahide has earned itself a reputation as the gourmet capital of the East Coast of Ireland, greatly owing to the fresh produce and catch of the day being delivered up to its restaurant’s doors. The restaurants options range from fine dining to good hearty food and everything in between. There are cuisines from all over the world as well as traditional Irish and on the marina and coastal strip are views to die for! Why not finish the evening off by choosing one of the lovely traditional bars that offer Irish Music to while away a few hours with a pint!
